4 Read the text and answer the questions.

1 What reason did Mat’s hackers give for their crime?
One of them said he did it to help companies learn how to really protect people’s digital lives.

2 What do you think about the reason?
It was a bad reason because hacking someone’s account and deleting their personal photos is wrong and hurts people.

3 Why was Mat particularly unhappy about this crime?
Because the hackers deleted Mat’s only photos of his daughter when she was young.

4 What are the two basic values the text talks about?
Respecting people’s property and thinking about others (considering the consequences of our decisions and actions).

5 Work in groups of three and do this role-play activity.

1 Prepare what you want to say, and any questions you want to ask, from the point of view of your character.

Mat: I was very sad and angry because the hackers deleted the only photos of my daughter when she was young. Why did you destroy my personal memories?

Mat’s child: I am really upset because those photos were very important to our family. You had no right to delete them.

Hacker: I wanted to show companies that their security is weak. I am sorry for deleting the photos, I did not think about the consequences.

2 Discuss the crime using your ideas in 1.

Mat: Hacking my account was wrong and deleting personal memories hurt my family. Hacker: I understand now that my actions caused real damage, even though I thought I was testing security. Mat’s child: Testing security is not an excuse to destroy things that belong to other people.

3 When you finish, discuss if or why you think it can be useful to see things from other people’s point of view.

It is useful because it helps us understand how our decisions affect others and why people make certain choices.

6 Decide what to do in these three situations and why.

1 You need to buy somebody a present but you don’t have any money. You see €20 on a desk at the back of the classroom. What do you do? I would leave the money on the desk or give it to the teacher, because taking money that belongs to someone else is stealing.

2 A friend wants to copy a history assignment you did this weekend. Your friend couldn’t do it because their grandfather was very ill. What do you do? I would help my friend understand the topic and write the assignment, but I wouldn’t let them copy my work directly, because copying is dishonest.

3 A friend wants you to tell their mum that you were together yesterday evening, but it isn’t true. What do you do? I would refuse to lie to their mum, because lying breaks trust, but I would advise my friend to speak honestly with their parents.

HELPING OUT IN THE PARK!

It all started when I was walking in the park with my friend after school last week. Suddenly, we heard an elderly woman shouting for help near a big tree. We ran over to see what was happening.

Meanwhile, her little cat was climbing higher and higher up the tree because it was scared of a dog. The situation was unusual because the cat was stuck on a thin branch and could not get down.

Then, I decided to climb up the lower branches while my friend stayed below to catch it if it fell. A few minutes later, I managed to reach the cat and safely hand it down. Finally, the woman got her cat back. The next day, she saw us in the park again and bought us cold lemonade to say thank you!
